Ominous Winter eBook P L Andre Reviews

I can't wait to read more from P.L. Andre!! I love his work. You're in for a big treat.
This book had been sitting in my TBR for quite a long time and I feel satisfied that I finished reading it.

The story solely focuses on the peaceful life of Mallorie, a 13 year old that has grown her entire life in the outskirts of a small town. In an attempt to escape the rat race, her parents bought an old farm with a haunting past that nobody seems willing to talk about. This is the only life Mallorie has ever known and due to the constraints of long commutes, she is currently being homeschooled.

Being the dilligent and good mannered 13 year old she is, Mallorie never skips her studies during the endless hours she spends home alone in the forest. However, lurid tales of a haunted forest right in front of her house begin to change Mallorie's life forever.

Having found a strange tree with an abandoned treehouse several years ago, Mallorie unearths the oddest key she has ever seen along with finding disturbing child drawings of 3 shadows... Strange things begin to happen. An adjacent barn that she has never felt comfortable approaching seems to hold a secret of a malignant supernatural force that might be linked to the treehouse, the river with no fish and the forest that nobody in the village ever dares visit...

Can Mallorie solve the puzzle before something bad happens to her?

The story is definitiely there. Mallorie is well mannered and vastly obedient, and yet she covers the allure of childish innocence that makes her seem much younger than her 13 years. The book has an increasingly interesting plot that continues in the second novelette.

Now, while there are many good things about this story, I feel like it has two major problems

1) Choppy writing. This is especially true during the first 50% of the story. It almost seems like the author was getting bored trying to talk about the minutiae of Mallorie's house cleaning chores and other mundane activities she does everyday to keep her mentally sane. While the goldfish carries some weight later in the story, some of the lesser narration could have been cut from the story without affecting anything. Mallorie repeats the same things that she lives too far away from any schools and her sisters are too busy going to college to take her in their cars. They never appear in any scene it seems. The book has lots of filler text that repeats itself that could have been cut from the story and it would have been a whole lot better. In reality, the story doesn't really begin until the 50% of the book.
I sometimes cringed when I saw the huge amount of really short sentences in the same paragraph. It's snowing today. Winters are always cold. I always drink hot cocoa to stay warm. etc... Okay, so those actual sentences don't appear in the book, but a huge portion of the text reads that way.
2) Half a book? The book ends in a bit of a cliffhanger but without really resolving anything. I can't say much without spoiling anything. Given I haven't read the second half yet, I cannot fully claim whether or not the two halves of the story should have been fused or not. However after reading the first half and feeling like something is missing, I do personally believe the book is vastly short (even considering the filler that slowed the story in the first half). Fusing the two parts together probably would have made it a much better story.

Once you get out of Mallorie's boring mundane life and into the supernatural, the story is quite entertaining and spooky at times. Despite the previously mentioned flaws, I will read the second half sometime and finish what I began. For the effort, I give the book 3 1/2 stars.
I love this book !!! It was so much fun to read. Perfect for the train or a rainy day, witha warm blanket and a coacoa ) I wanted to finish in one sitting.
With great attention to detail the author gradually introduces us to an intricate story before unveiling a mystery that keep us seeking more. To this extent the end seems open for interpretation. P.L. Andre's narrative is so descriptive it allows us to empathize with the reality presented, in the moment by moment, taking all necessary time to illustrate what Mallory sees in her ever progressing Land of Now. Excellent read, great use of words and imagery (at times appearing oniric). I look forward to reading more!
