Kronberg is a wonderful character, prickly, independent, analytical, intelligent, and often unreasonable, but grounded in altruism and a deep love for her father, who always encouraged her and never constrained her ambitions. Holmes is presented as a brilliant but flawed individual, damaged by the psychological torments of his childhood, and with a mildly autistic inability to respond with appropriate human reactions to emotional situations. Much like the Mary Russell books by Laurie King, the Kronberg stories show Holmes drawing emotionally closer to his distaff companion. The male masquerade aspect of the stories is handled deftly, with a great deal of insight into what care someone like Anna must take in maintaining the illusion of masculinity, and the stresses it induces. It would best serve the reader to begin with the first book in the series, as this third volume stands alone only with some difficulty, but it is a welcome addition to the chronology and whets the appetite for the next episode.

i loved this series of books and the interaction with Sherlock Holmes was amazing!!! I like how the characters interacted and let you know there was something special between them but their own intriquite personalities wouldn't allow them to relax and be with each other even though they protected one another in many situations. The time period was raw and at times demanding but kept you in suspence.
I had forgotten about this series and did not realize that the next book had been released. It was a lovely surprise.
After her escape from Moriarty, pregnant and now a murderess, she is pursued by Moran. The book covers the relentless pursuit which is brutal in its viciousness. No one escaped unharmed. The limitations of being a woman and being pregnant while trying to discover the purpose of the situation she was thrust into (of her own accord) in the first book, force her into some very difficult situations.
Anna was still an even match for Holmes and it was so interesting to watch the wheels turn in her head. I enjoy her strength and wit while seeing her tendency to examine the world without sentimentality or emotion. She is a complex, intelligent character and yet not really a heroine. Anti-heroine really. She is very self-centered but conscience strikes her as she recognizes her selfishness.
It was a very satisfying read to the very end.
Of the three part series about Anna Kronberg, it was hard to determine which was the best! Anna, could not go to medical school because she was a woman. So, she cut her hair short, learned to act like a man, dressed the part and Anna, now Anton went to medical school and became England best Bacteriologist. In the first book she comes to know Sherlock Holmes. Her adventures with her work, helping Holmes with his, living in one of the poorest parts of London and treating her neighbors keeps her busy. In the meantime, she takes a local thief as a lover. Over time she comes to love Sherlock as he does her, but each choose not to act on their feelings. This book is great, but you must read all 3 in order. There is a prequel, but I did not enjoy it . Read all 3 in order and enjoy all about Anna, her friends and her enemies.
I liked this trilogy less the more I got through it - Loved the first one (breath of fresh air), was slightly disgusted by the second one (ew, really?), and nearly couldn't finish this last one (Ugh - make it stop). But Anna is a great character, and as always, anything well-written that incorporates Sherlock Holmes is always a good read.
I really liked this book as a conclusion to the previous 2 in the series. The story had lots of movement, traveling and talking. Just one reason for the title being Journey, I guess. The conversations between Anna and Sherlock were very enjoyable to read even though both of them drove me crazy sometimes. One of their best conversations was the contest of imaginations for the cause of a passer-by's foot deformity. Very clever. But they often seemed to talk past each other and frequently missed meaningful emotional connections.
One thing I was never clear about was Moriarty's motivation for the germ warfare plan. Maybe that part was a bit too complicated or subtle for me to get. I know there was espionage and politics and money involved. But I really missed the core driver for Moriarty. And I never believed for a moment it was a misunderstanding created by Anna.
One thing that bugged me a lot was Sherlock's absences when Anna was attacked. He seemed to be away on some other business every time bad things happened to her. It made him seem ineffective as a hero although a genius in so many other ways.
I think book 2 was my favorite but this was a wonderful completion of the series.
