Trent Zelazny paints a sometimes desperate portrait of a man beaten down by life but still searching for something. Max is trapped in a loveless marriage and a lifeless town. Mostly, he is trapped by his own fear and lack of confidence. The writing is sharp, the characters real, and the story simply amazing.The tension in Voiceless is like a pot simmering on the stove - you just know it's going to boil over but you don't know when. The underlying sense of malice in the small, claustrophobic town grows as the story unfolds. The antagonists are everybody's antagonists. Those guys in the bar that are too loud and stare at you too long. That group of thugs you pass on the street and hear them mutter things and laugh. But what if they actually came after you, wanted something from you? The bad guys in Voiceless are REALLY bad, and they want something from Max.
Voiceless is at once a novel of heartbreak and a story of redemption. It is emotion ripped to the bone. Truly a stunning story. Voiceless is the first novel I've read by Trent Zelazny but it will not be the last.

Trent Zelazny’s new novel – Voiceless – once again pays tribute to this brilliant writer’s uncanny ability to capture a character’s flaws as well as their virtues laced with secrets of the most beautiful portrayals of the epitome of Creeple People. And if you’ve ever been in love before, Voiceless might just make you want to do it all over again. Just for the hell of it. I was in a relationship once that resembled an encounter with a browbeating emotional desert. I’m not saying that’s the way Voiceless is or that’s the way it isn’t. You’ll have to make that journey into the desert and decide for yourself.
It’s a story filled with the beauty and the ugly realities of life that often addict many of us and kills others. I was riveted to its mystery as it unfolded mercilessly clawing at my feet and suddenly lurched and slammed into my broken dreams – it was one damned thing after the other – just the way I like it. Zelazny introduces you to NPD Namby-Pamby Disorder; a most penetrating experience with Mondrian; and then takes you deep into the rabbit hole.
It turns into something like popcorn reaching critical mass and can’t take it any longer. Trent Zelazny has the ability to take you and push you into the center of yourself. He pulls you across your past, your nightmares, your anger, your fear and lets you sit there awhile to think about it – or just feel it. I enjoyed all of it. Zelazny is a master of suspense.
I’m extremely partial to a previous work from Zelazny known as Butterfly Potion. It’s currently my favorite of his work. But – this book – in my humble opinion – is probably his best yet. Going deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole – and deeper again – and then finally literally doing it – that was one of the most exciting parts of this story for me – ah the blackness. Broken Dreams come to life – manifesting in nightmares – die right in front of you – and walk away. And wherever you go, there you are. Five Massive Stars in the dark night of the New Mexico sky.
This was a great book! I can't remember the last time I felt so much tension and uneasiness while reading a story. And THAT is a wonderful thing! It's must-read in my opinion.
Most of Trent Zelazny's stories have kept me up into the small hours of the night to see how they end. This one was no exception. It's cleverly crafted and it's full of suspense and darkness and realism and a bit of beauty, too. It was an uneasy read, and this was the first story of his where I actually grew to loathe the main characters (Max and his wife both), but I loved the novel for that.
Voiceless is a suspenseful novel with very realistic characters, chiefly the timid protagonist (I can identify with) who, already struggling to cope with his overbearing wife, gets himself entangled in a gravely precarious situation after they move to a remote small town. His wife constantly berates him, the town bullies harass him, and the house ... or the whole desert ... seems to be haunted.
SPOILER Though supernatural overtones weren't followed through in a substantial way, the character grew and the inevitable ending was satisfying.
There are times when this dark fable loses itself in a musical spiral of language "A gentle breeze carried whispers of contempt. It rose and faded, dwindled away, rose and faded, rose and faded, dwindled, dwindled away." This is Trent Zelazny at his best. He definitely knows how to ratchet tension. A tension that at times is unbearable. But he can be counted on not to lose his reader, even though he throws word combos that, for another writer, would do just that. He drops these regularly and they are a kind of beat that you look forward to. In this latest novel a newly forged style is born. Such images as "judgmental windowpane eyes" is a surreal reminder that Trent Zelazny is in his own lunar landscape.
Most of the time I prefer novels where the story starts RIGHT AWAY, you know? Where the basic inciting incident is in the first 1 to 20 pages and it is very clear what the dilemma is for the characters and what the stakes are. But, I realized while reading Voiceless that there is definitely an exception to this. And that is when, with a book like Voiceless, there is just SOMETHING in the vibe, something between the words and the sentences where you just KNOW that awful things are going to happen. Know what I mean?
Trent Zelazny with Voiceless creates creepy tension on the very first page and then slowly slowy amps it up tighter and tighter until it's almost difficult to stand. But, for me, I loved that experience. I want and need strong effects in my reading and this book conveys so much.
Also great is the way the marriage of Max and Camille is portrayed. Both spouses seem so miserable and both seem to have a very good reason, though I hated Camille and felt so much sympathy for Max.
