Must Love Breeches A Time Travel Romance Volume 1 Angela Quarles 9780990540014 Books

This a phenomenal read. The imagination and fun spirit that went into writing this book came through loud and clear. Isabelle Rochon works for the British Museum and is anticipating a promotion. She is at a reenactment of a ball when she finds herself transported back to 1834. The fun begins immediately when she meets our H, Phineas Montague. He is my new favorite Hero. The simple romance you feel that radiates from how Phineas can be proper, protective and seductive is astounding IMO.

He has the disposition of Mr. Darcy and Mr. Knightly all dry and serious but when you want charm he sweeps Isabelle in a waltz. When you want sexy he turns up the heat. The love scenes are steamy, but not overdone. The pair form an alliance to appear engaged but they both get way more than bargain for. He thinks she is quite odd with her unfamiliar dialect. Questioning," What the devil is a dude?"

She befriends Phin's cousin Ada and she is the first that she shares her secret with. I had a lot of laughs, sighs, heart palpatations and some tears as well. You really feel the passion grow between the couple and you are cheering them along but you empathize with Isabelle's conflict. She is struggling to get back to her world but in order to do that she has to leave behind the man she has fallen desperately in love with. Than there is Phineas's battle of wanting to do what will make Isabelle happy but he must let her go for that to happen.

*************SPOILERS**************

That is when the tears came because he is so in love with her and the author does not leave you out in his inner thoughts and fears. When Isabelle goes back to her time the emotion they both experience just reaches in and pulls at your heart. The image of Phineas falling to his knees as she disappears. The author even takes the time to give you a satisfying epilogue (30 years later). Trust me when I say you do not want to miss this read. I truly was not expecting it to take my breath away as it did. There is a lot of history that brings in the timeline at certain events and the h struggle with coming from the future and losing modern luxury's we take for granted. Do yourself a favor and read this book you will not regret it.

Must Love Breeches A Time Travel Romance Volume 1 Angela Quarles 9780990540014 Books Reviews

The story is entertaining enough. This is a good book for a fun, mindless read. The time-travel was fun, if you don't have pet peeves about accuracy and plot holes. However, the bulk of the story focused on the minor storylines and time-travel shenanigans, like the heroine's effort to adjust to life in the early 1800's and return to her time period. What was missing was a developing relationship between the heroine and hero. Therefore, when the heroine and hero finally committed to one another, I really wasn't that invested and, therefore, didn't care that much. If you like a romance novel to be focused primarily on a strong heroine-hero relationship that draws you into the romance, this probably isn't the book for you. Along the same lines, I prefer a book that is written in equal parts from the heroine's and hero's perspective. I think this book was lacking in the hero's perspective. For me, it played a part in my lack of investment in the romance.

SPOILER At the end, we discover the heroine was not from preset day as one would assume, because of her smart phone and the other depictions of modern day life. As it turns out, she was from 1973. The author includes a explanation stating that the heroine's time travel affected the world and made technology advance more rapidly. It would have been an okay, albeit random, edition to the book; however, the vocabulary, clothing, and culture that were described were not that of 1973. It seemed like a bit of a reach and a little unnecessary. If the author has to explain it, should it be in the book?
I read a lot of time travel romances, but have only a few that I'd read over and over again. This is one of them. The other reviewers have covered all the bases, so all I can add is how "real" this book felt. I mean, the best part of a time travel story is seeing that particular time period through the eyes of the main character. Most stories give the reader one or two "adjustment" issues that usually cover all the expected challenges, but in MLB, the author gave me a new taste of 19th century England, and it felt ... believable. Isn't that why we read? We know it's fiction, but when you really get transported into the author's world, you get lost in the story. That's what happened to me. I loved it!

If you're a fan of Barbara Longley's time travel romances, you'll love this one too.

**SPOILER ALERT (sort of)**

The ending is not in error, by the way...because she time traveled, her "present" was changed because of the things she does in the past. Her "present" at the start of the book is actually 1973. Her present wasn't 2014 which we all presumed when we started the book. I didn't get it at first either. It's a time loop that begs the question which came first, the chicken or the egg -- the altered 1973 or her passage through the 1800's that actually caused the altered future. At least that's my take on it ;)
